Our Surface Design Program provides you with the fundamental knowledge and skills you need to work in the surface design industry. Explore industry practices, essential business considerations, and practical operations. Learn manual techniques for mark making, and practice using industry-standard software to create digital motifs and repeat patterns for use on everyday objects (gift-wrap, wall coverings, fabric for apparel, home décor, and more).

Career Opportunities

Employers can typically be found in the fashion, retail, product, interior decorating, and design industries as well as related sectors. Opportunities may also exist to work as a freelance artist, licensed artist, microstock artist, or print-on-demand (POD) artist.

Prerequisites

You must be computer literate.

Recommendations

You will have the most success in the program if you already have experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications before you start taking the required courses. If you do not have any Adobe Creative Cloud experience, you may wish to consider taking our COMP 9591 Introduction to Adobe Creative Cloud (Online) course before you start this program.

Technical Requirements

You must have access to the Internet, a computer capable of running the latest version of Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator and Photoshop), a printer, a scanner (or a smartphone that can scan high-resolution images), a digital camera (or a smartphone with a quality digital camera), basic art supplies (black ink, pencils, crayons, paint, etc.), and a visual diary or sketchbook.
