General English and Math Assessments Email to a Friend You must have completed a General English Assessment (or have an approved equivalent) before you register in the following courses: ENGL 9030 (English Essentials) ENGL 1030 (Skills for College English) COMM 1008 (College English) COMM 1138 (College English) Online The General English Assessment is a tool used to measure your reading and writing skills. Your assessment results will direct you to the English course that is most suitable for you. The assessment consists of two parts: an opinion essay (three to five paragraphs long) and a multiple-choice reading comprehension test. The essay may be handwritten or typed on the computer; the multiple-choice test must be done on the computer. The assessment will take at least two hours to complete. You must have completed a General Math Assessment (or have an approved equivalent) before you register in the following courses: MATH 1074 (Mathematics) MATH 1103 (Hospitality Mathematics) The General Math Assessment is a tool used to measure your math skills. Your assessment results will direct you to the math course that is most suitable for you. The assessment consists of a multiple-choice math test done on the computer. The assessment will take at least 30 minutes to complete. To prepare for the General Math Assessment, visit the Assessment Centre web page. You must book your assessment appointment by calling the Contact Centre at 416-415-2000. You will need your student ID number and password to book an appointment. If you need to create an ID number, visit a Student Service Centre. You can find out your existing ID number by calling the Contact Centre. If you have a physical, emotional or learning disability, you may request special accommodation for your assessment. Casa Loma Campus Assessment CentreLocation: Casa Loma Campus, 160 Kendal Ave., Building C (CLC), Room 330 (in the Library Learning Commons) St. James Campus Assessment CentreLocation: St. James Campus, 200 King St. E., Building A (SJA), Room 275 To complete your assessment, you must bring current government-issued photo identification (for example, a driver's licence), a pen, a pencil and the assessment fee ($40 for the General English Assessment and $35 for the General Math Assessment). Assessment fees are payable by cash, certified cheque, credit card (Visa Credit or MasterCard), debit or money order, but personal cheques are not accepted. You will get your results immediately. As soon as you complete your assessment, you will meet with an assessment advisor to discuss your English or math course placement. The advisor will give you a letter indicating the English or math course in which you are permitted to enrol. You must successfully complete that course before registering in the next level. (Note that, in peak periods, personal interviews may not be possible; results would then be mailed.)
