Our Part 3 Large Buildings Classification and Construction course is a detailed technical course. This building code course focuses on large building classification and construction as outlined within Division B, Part 3, of the Ontario Building Code. The curriculum covers separation of major occupancies; building area and height; streets, building size and construction; occupant load; fire separations and fire-resistance ratings; firewalls; closures; fire stopping; provisions for firefighting; and mezzanines and interconnected floor spaces.

This course has been recognized as Gold Seal accredited training by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA).
Course Delivery Method:
This is normally an in-class course but will be offered temporarily online via Blackboard Learn/Collaborate while college buildings are closed.
You must bring a copy of the 2012 Building Code Compendium to the first class. The compendium is available for purchase at the George Brown College bookstore (either on campus or online), at our Building Code and Trade Manuals website and at the Publications Ontario website.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) exam is not included. MMAH exam and Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) information can be found on the MMAH website. (Humber College hosts the Building Code exams on behalf of the MMAH. Visit the Humber College Ontario Building Code Examinations website to schedule and pay for the applicable exam.)

You must have a general understanding of the building construction process and basic blueprint reading skills. If you are pursuing our Construction Superintendent Program, you must have completed BLDG 9245 Part 9 The House Building Envelope or BLDG 9265 Part 9 The House Building Envelope (Distance Learning).
You will have the most success in this course if you have already completed BLDG 9242 Part 9 Buildings Fire Protection or BLDG 9244 Part 9 The House Health and Safety or BLDG 9264 Part 9 The House Health and Safety (Distance Learning) or BLDG 9289 Part 9 The House Health and Safety Daytime or BLDG 9233 Small Buildings 2012 or BLDG 9250 Small Buildings 2012 (Distance Learning) before you start this course.
