Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) Requirements for Students

George Brown College student signign into their account and using their multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Mandatory deadline for students is Tuesday, May 30, 2023

Our cyber security is changing. You will not be able to access your George Brown College accounts – and thus your courses and important information – if you do not complete the required multi-factor authentication (MFA) set-up by Tuesday, May, 30.

MFA is a cyber security best practice that is widely used by organizations around the world to protect systems and users. Simply put, when logging in using your student account, you’ll be asked to authenticate on your mobile device through the Microsoft Authenticator app as an extra layer of security. You will not need to authenticate with every log in; you will be asked once a month or whenever you sign in from a new location.

The Microsoft Authenticator app is free and available for download from the Google Play Store for Android or Apple App Store for iOS. The college has no access to your personal devices after you install the app.

For FAQs and to learn how to set up and use the Microsoft Authenticator app, visit the college-wide Introducing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) web page. If you still have issues with or questions about setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app, contact the Technical Support HelpDesk at helpdesk@georgebrown.ca or 416-415-5000, ext. 4357 (select option 1 for MFA support).

We highly encourage setting up MFA as soon as possible. We understand that this may seem like a big change, but it’s necessary as MFA provides enhanced security and makes it safer for you to access and protect your information. Any cyber security-related questions or concerns should be directed to cybersecurity@georgebrown.ca, and a copy of the college’s full MFA policy is available online.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to cyber security and your patience as we launch innovative solutions to better protect us all.
