    OntarioLearn description: This is a beginning medical transcription course designed to provide students with a working knowledge of transcription of medical reports. Transcription is taking the spoken word and turning it into a written document. Case studies are provided so that the student will gain knowledge in the transcribing of various medical reports. Medical reports will be transcribed from ten individual case studies, each of which concerns an in-patient with a specific medical problem. There are between four and eight reports within each case study. Students will be involved in the care of the patient from the date of admission through the date of discharge.


    This is an online course delivered via OntarioLearn. Please ensure you are familiar with the technology requirements specific to this course:

    • Hardware: Pentium II PC (233 MHz processor or faster) with 64 MB RAM or greater, 40 MB of available hard-disk space, CD-ROM drive, Sound Blaster-compatible sound card and speakers (or earphones), 800x400 monitor capable of displaying 256 colours
    • Operating system: Windows 7/8/10/XP/Vista
    • Software: Microsoft Word 97/2007/2010/2013 (Macintosh users will need to purchase a Microsoft Word compatibility program)

    Transcription playback software will be a free download from the Internet. (Traditional equipment will be simulated). You may also choose to purchase a foot pedal from the software download site (optional). Teacher support (via email) and technical support (via phone) will be available for this course.


    You must have completed OP 9026 Medical Transcription Fundamentals and OP 9035 Medical Transcription Styles and Practices (as well as all its prerequisites) or approved equivalents. You must also be able to type a minimum of 30 words per minute, be familiar with a word processing package (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Keyboarding Pro) and have good punctuation and grammar skills.
