New Canadian adds to his marketing skills with George Brown education

Sergio Jaua credits George Brown College with helping his Canadian career with Sunwing Travel Group take flight.

Sergio immigrated to Canada from Venezuela in 2011. He was happy to move away from an unpredictable economic and political situation, but he also left behind valuable career contacts and educational recognition as a graphic designer. Not only did he need a place to practise his English language skills, but also to gain credentials that would give him new career footing in North America. That’s where George Brown’s Marketing Certificate came in. “One of the first decisions I made when I came to Canada was to study, and I think that was very helpful to my career.”

“George Brown has a special talent for finding very good teachers. A big percentage of the instructors I had were not only great teachers, but were also professionals working in their field who could share current information on the industry. My experience with the certificate was incredible.”

Sergio proves that it’s always possible, and important, to learn something new. Although he was an experienced graphic designer in the advertising field in Venezuela, he picked up a number of new marketing skills at George Brown, from research and strategy to key digital tools. “The online marketing world is always changing,” he says. “I acquired a deeper knowledge of how to create digital marketing and social media campaigns as part of my certificate.”

During his third certificate course, Sergio landed his first Canadian job at Sunwing. The role brought together his past work experience and ongoing class work. “This job was the perfect mix of everything – both marketing and design,” he notes. After completing his certificate, he was promoted from his entry-level graphic design position to a brand design supervisor role, with five designers now reporting to him.

Sergio was able to work on his certificate even after being hired full-time at Sunwing; he appreciated the affordability and flexible schedules of continuing education courses at George Brown. He also runs his own freelance business – much like he did back in Venezuela. He credits the college with giving him career confidence and helping him to better understand his clients’ needs.

“Because of the certificate, I consider myself more assertive in my job activities and more focused in my creativity,” he explains. “When you know exactly how the whole marketing process works, you can be more focused on exactly what the client needs. The certificate gave me better tools to sell an idea to a client – to be able to show the full potential of the idea, and why it would be important for the consumer.” Now Sergio has practical tools to back up his creative concepts.

His college experience was also vital for networking – both for meeting like-minded students and cutting-edge teachers. “George Brown has a special talent for finding very good teachers. A big percentage of the instructors I had were not only great teachers, but were also professionals working in their field who could share current information on the industry. My experience with the certificate was incredible.”

Sergio plans to continue his lifelong learning relationship with George Brown, as he intends to take courses in the User Experience Design Certificate. “In my field, it is important to be up-to-date – to add to your skills and to your profile,” he explains. “I feel I have room to keep on growing and finding things and learning new things.”

Whatever comes next, Sergio is always looking for fresh perspectives, tools and skills. George Brown gave him all three, and made him more desirable to Canadian employers – especially as a recent immigrant. “When you have studied here in Canada, I think people can relate to the kind of worker you might be, and better understand the kind of knowledge you have,” he adds. “They already know the reputation of George Brown, and that was an important thing for my profile.”

Sergio found a challenging and rewarding new educational experience through George Brown. Equipped with his Canadian skills and credentials, his career prospects will continue to soar.
