Taking the next step
Esthetician uses two George Brown certificates to land her dream job
Natalie Rogers was one year removed from high school when she walked through the door of the George Brown School of Makeup and Esthetics for the first time. After taking a year off after graduation, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in esthetics – and she knew where she wanted to begin that career.
“I knew there were plenty of private schools who offered similar programs,” Natalie recalls. “But I wanted to go to a college, and George Brown came highly recommended.”
As she began taking classes toward the Advanced Esthetics Certificate, Natalie quickly realized that the positive reputation was well-earned.
“The school is very organized and very efficient – important traits to pass along for those of us wanting to have a career in the field,” she says. “Although there was a lot to learn, the teachers were all so passionate you never feel overwhelmed or behind.”
Going back to school
While she was taking classes, Natalie began to think about furthering her education past her certificate. Although she didn’t have any definite plans, she knew she wanted to remain in the field and build on her existing esthetics knowledge. Once she had finished the certificate and was working at a salon, she discovered that medical esthetics had become a sought-after specialty in the industry.
As luck would have it, George Brown was preparing to launch the Medical Esthetics Certificate, which includes training in the latest medical esthetics treatments, including microdermabrasion, chemical peels and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.

When Natalie heard about the new certificate, she knew she wanted to be part of it. She was even more excited when she discovered that her success in the Advanced Esthetics Certificate was a prerequisite for admittance. Natalie began classes in 2009 – and, once again, had a thoroughly positive experience.
“You feel good about going to class because the instructors create a great environment to learn in,” she remembers.
Shortly after completing the Medical Esthetics Certificate, she accepted a position at Strawberry Fields Spa and Wellness in The Beaches. And she’s putting her George Brown education to good use.
“When you finish the certificate, you are definitely prepared to go to work,” she says. “You are equipped with the latest techniques and knowledge, so you have the confidence to do the job. That confidence is the key.”
It’s certainly working for Natalie.
“I draw on my George Brown classes each and every day,” she says. “I know what spas should be doing, and I know what I should be doing. I offer the clients the best services. This job is just what I was looking for. I truly love it.”
