Getting the Job
Graphic Designer gets creative for new role
For Eliza Ghinea, the decision to enroll in visual arts courses was based on career advancement.
“I was working as a graphic designer, but was more heavily involved in the production side,” Eliza says. “I wanted to work in the creative side, which is why I decided to return to school.”
The decision regarding where to register was even easier.
“When I first moved to Canada, about 10 years ago, I took some Continuing Education courses at George Brown College and I loved everything about the school, from its convenient location to the price – and everything in between,” she says. “For me, going to George Brown is like returning home.”
After starting the Visual Arts Certificate courses (now known as the Fine Arts Certificate) in January 2004, Eliza immediately saw results.
Rediscovering Creativity
“The classes I took dealt with design, colour, drawing, history and so much more,” she says. “I quickly rediscovered my creativity and started to feel like a new person. I felt enlightened.”
Two courses, in particular, helped Eliza with her enlightenment. Foundation Colour and Foundation Design both explore a variety of ideas, techniques, concepts and principles that provide students with a greater understanding of the subject.
“Those classes were definitely the ones to help me most directly, but all of my classes helped me in my career and will help me down the line,” she says.
After the completion of her certificate in December 2006, Eliza accomplished another goal: moving into the creative side of graphic design.
“I am at the same job with the same title, but it is now much more creative work.”
Making a Return
But that’s not the end of the story for Eliza. In the spring of 2008, she returned to the school to take courses toward the Proficiency in French Certificate.
“I work with bilingual documents at work, so it’s definitely going to help me in that regard,” she says. “I can manage now, but I definitely needed to upgrade in order to advance in my career.”
And, as with her previous experiences with Continuing Education at George Brown, Eliza recommends the courses highly to anyone looking to continue their education.
“I am very happy with George Brown. I consider myself very lucky to have access to such a great institution,” she says. “For the instructors, it’s not just their job. And we can tell that. It’s more like an experience – an enjoyable life experience.”
