Careers as a makeup artist
by Carolyn Wong
Welcome to the world of makeup where many exciting career opportunities await you.
Makeup artistry is a profession for those with imagination, vision and business know-how. The Yorkville School of Makeup and Esthetics teaches not only the technical aspects of makeup artistry but also the essential business and networking skills to help our students get their careers off the ground.
We encourage our students to consider themselves artists whose canvas is the human face and help them foster their own individual sense of style and creativity.
Given the fact that the beauty, fashion and entertainment industries rely so much on the skills of professional makeup artists, career possibilities are many and varied. As a makeup artist, you could be working on the set of a major motion picture, behind the scenes of a runway fashion show or making a nervous bride-to-be look absolutely perfect on her big day.
The choice is yours.
There are two basic makeup categories - Special Effects and Beauty - each one is rich with amazing and unique opportunities.
Special Effects
Television shows, motion pictures and stage productions look to makeup artists to transform actors and performers into realistic characters, no matter how ordinary, outrageous, beautiful, grotesque or fantastical their roles are.
The makeup artist plays an important part in the creative process and final production that often leave audiences in awe. This aspect of film production is so significant, it is even recognized by the Oscars with an Achievement in Makeup category.
The hours may be long and hectic but many makeup artists in the entertainment industry also enjoy lucrative careers with great perks like opportunities to travel to exotic locations, once-in-a-lifetime chances to meet and work with other talented artists and the satisfaction of seeing their work on the big screen or on Broadway.
Beauty
Within the Beauty category, there is a wider range of opportunities and the chance to work with a more diverse clientele including fashion designers, modeling agencies, magazines, advertisers, cosmetic companies, image consultants, and individuals such as brides-to-be and post-surgical patients.
Makeup artists who work in the fashion industry are part of a creative team that often includes clothing designers, models, hairstylists, wardrobe stylists, photographers and art directors all working together to achieve a particular look for a runway show or a magazine cover.
People are starting to pay more attention to their appearance because they want to portray a strong image to others as well as feel good about themselves. In doing so, they seek the help of image consultants to update their look and make appropriate wardrobe choices. Makeup artists are often called upon to educate individuals on the latest products available at the cosmetic counters as well as how to rejuvenate and freshen their skin and properly apply cosmetics to deliver the desired results.
The wedding industry has become a big business with all the products and services that are now available. Makeup is an extremely important consideration because all eyes will be on the bride throughout the entire day.
The techniques and tricks for applying bridal makeup are quite different from other makeup applications because a bride needs to look flawless in person as well as in her wedding photos. Our Professional Makeup Artist - Bridal Certificate not only teaches students the necessary techniques but also prepares them to work in all facets of the wedding industry including bridal runway fashion shows and photo shoots for bridal magazines.
Word-of-mouth and client referrals keep many bridal makeup artists busy throughout the year and the nature of this work allows them to run their own businesses, which can be challenging yet very rewarding.

Extensive training for estheticians
The Yorkville School of Makeup and Esthetics teaches advanced techniques and specialized knowledge of the face and body.
Our program is intensive in terms of required hours and compulsory courses which ensure our graduates are fully qualified to provide care in a broad range of esthetic services. We stress the importance of sanitation and hygienic procedures and our students work on actual clients and in a realistic spa setting.
Unique to the Yorkville School is an 80-hour compulsory course focused on the business side of esthetics including building clientele, customer relations, sales and retail operations.
Our location in the heart of Canada’s fashion and beauty center gives students a glimpse at the exciting opportunities that await them in the chic salons, spas, health centres and retail stores of Yorkville and beyond.
Help others look and feel beautiful
Whether it’s for perfectly shaped eyebrows or healthy, glowing skin, estheticians are the experts people turn to. They work with women and men of all ages to determine the most suitable regimens and products for their specific skin type and teach them how to care for their skin between visits.
While there are plenty of opportunities in urban centres, the spa industry has been taking its business off the beaten track to resorts in quiet, remote locations or on cruise ships that sailing to exotic destinations.
Working in a salon or running a spa requires good people skills, business acumen and a passion for helping others look and feel amazing.
Bring products to the people
New products ranging from lipstick to anti-aging creams are constantly being introduced to the counters and shelves of department stores and drugstores in fierce competition for consumer loyalty and dollars.
The cosmetic and beauty product industry offers opportunities for estheticians to use their knowledge as product experts to work as sales reps or purchasers and marketers for cosmetic firms, manufacturers and distributors.
Teachers who have been there and done that
The instructors at the Yorkville School have a wide range of experience. Some work in salons and spas, some run their own businesses and others work independently as consultants. Collectively, they offer our students the kind of education and mentoring that is needed to nurture and develop their techniques, passion and talent. If you are unsure about where you want to apply your skills as an esthetician, the Yorkville School instructors are happy to share their experiences and insights with you.
Raising the bar on nails
Although nail technicians have always worked alongside other beauty professionals in salon-type settings, they have come into their own as high-end spas dedicated solely to the hands and feet are popping up in cities and suburbs alike.
These specialty businesses, known as nail spas or nail bars, set high standards not only for hygienic practices but also for outstanding service, fun, outgoing atmospheres and modern, stylish décor. This recent trend in the beauty industry has given nail technicians greater professional status and more career opportunities to choose from.
Beyond the basics
The Yorkville School of Makeup and Esthetics teaches students everything they need to know to be nail technicians including traditional manicures and pedicures as well as more complex techniques like French manicures, fibreglass nail application, acrylic nails, gel nails, and various hand and foot massages. They are also encouraged to tap into their creative side with nail artistry, sculptured nails and airbrushing.
Health and safety issues are extremely important for nail technicians who must be diligent about checking for signs of skin or nail disease, using and storing the right chemicals properly and sanitizing their tools to prevent damage or infection. The Yorkville School emphasizes all of these practices with their students from the get-go.
As with most professionals in the beauty industry, strong people skills and a good business sense are important for building a large and loyal clientele. Students in the advanced level courses are required to complete 100-200 studio hours in the Yorkville School’s onsite spa. This allows them to practice their techniques, learn how to interact with real clients and gain a better understanding of how salons and spas are run.
Many nail technicians provide their manicure and pedicure services in salons and spas while others are self-employed and work from home or travel to their clients’ homes. There are also many exciting opportunities in the fashion industry as nails, like hair and makeup, are an important element of a runway show or a magazine cover.
Teachers who have been there and done that
The instructors at the Yorkville School have a wide range of experience and industry awards hanging on their walls. Some work in salons and spas with clients and others work in the editorial and entertainment industries as freelancers.
Collectively, they offer our students the kind of education and mentoring that is needed to nurture and develop their techniques, passion and talent. If you are unsure about where you want to apply your skills as a nail technician, the Yorkville School instructors are happy to share their experiences and insights with you.
